So the results of a new study may enlighten or enrage you, depending on how you define ‘biscuit’.

A poll has revealed the Jaffa Cake is the ‘most dunkable’ biscuit, while the plain Digestive is the least.

Researchers dunked 17 of the most popular biscuits into water at the average temperature of a cup of tea – around 70 to 75C – and recorded how long it took them to break apart.

Coming in first place was the Jaffa Cake – a controversial finding if you don’t define them as a biscuit – which withstood 116 dunks before breaking.

Legally they are considered a cake but are regularly found in the biscuit aisle of supermarkets.

In second place was the Chocolate Leibniz, which lasted 80 dunks, followed by the Bourbon biscuit at 78 dunks.

In last place came the plain Digestive, lasting just six dunks – or 12 seconds – before falling apart.

The second part of the study involved polling more than 2,000 people in the UK aged 16 and over about their favourite biscuits to enjoy with a cuppa.

Despite the Digestive coming in bottom of the ‘dunkable’ ratings the nation chose it as their favourite biscuit to dunk, with more than a quarter of the vote.

A spokesman for TopRatedCasinos, who carried out the research, said: ‘While we may be a nation divided on a lot of things, our love of tea and biscuits has lasted through the ages.

‘Having said that, Britain’s treasured pastime does have the tendency to get quite controversial.

‘With a whopping 116 dunks, and a total time of three minutes and 16 seconds before it broke apart, the humble Jaffa Cake has been crowned the most dunkable biscuit.

‘We must acknowledge this is perhaps a slightly controversial winner, depending on what side of the ‘biscuit vs cake’ debate you land on.

‘Unfortunately the trusty Digestive came out as the least dunkable biscuit. 

‘Despite this, the nation still voted it as their favourite biscuit to dunk – 26 per cent of Brits clearly enjoy some extra crumbs in their tea.’
