Here are my savvy tips and clever buys to make sure those back-to-school buys stay looking their best . . .

MAKE YOUR MARK: The first step to making school kit last is to name it. Mark every item clearly. There are dozens of different ways to tag the clothes. But the cheapest and easiest is with a laundry pen.
Ryman’s has one such marker — and 30 iron-on name tags — for £1, down from £1.99.
HANG IT ALL: You will get more wear out of uniforms if children change into their own clothes when they get home from school. Also encourage them to hang up their uniform instead of just dumping it on the floor or straight in the laundry.
HAIR TODAY, GONE TOMORROW: Keep a lint roller near the front door to clean stray locks, pet hair and fluff from uniform. A rainbow roller is down from £1.80 to £1 at Hobbycraft.
SEW OR NO: Fix missing blazer or blouse buttons with a mini sewing kit, £3 from The Works. At the same store, you can get Korbond hemming web, ten metres for £2. It’s a sew-free, iron-on way to fix drooping hems.
STAIN SOLUTIONS: Keep items looking bright and clean with stain removers. Wilko’s five-star rated product, 1kg for £1.50, is great to have to hand. For tougher marks, Stain Devils Pen & Ink and Nature & Cosmetics (for grass, mud and make-up), £1.99 each at dr-beckmann.co.uk, should work.
THE WHITE STUFF: It can be hard to stop white socks, shirts and PE tops from fading or going grey. Make sure you wash whites and colours separately and try not to pack the machine too full, to help everything get clean.
For extra help, Vanish Oxi Advance Crystal White fabric stain remover powder, 1.5kg, is down from £14 to £8.50 at Morrisons.
