You’ll be left with refreshed furniture and something to show off to your visitors . . .

BRUSH STROKES: People spend £978 a year on furniture and furnishings, according to Simply Plastics, but you can easily revive old or worn wooden pieces.

Sand it down and add a fresh layer of paint or wood stain.
Dulux Quick Dry Satinwood Paint, for wood and metal, is currently down from £21 to £12 at Homebase, available in blue Mineral Mist or Pretty Pink.

Simply adding new door knobs and handles is another cheap way to give furniture a new look.

You can get a pack of two colourful ceramic door knobs from just £2 at Dunelm.

NO-WOBBLE WOOD: Loose chair or table legs can often be fixed by tightening screws.

Apply wood glue evenly to any loose joints, clamp and allow them to dry for at least 24 hours.

You can check if any legs are uneven by placing the chair on a flat surface — then, if necessary, trim longer legs or add adhesive felt pads to shorter ones.

COVER UP: Stained or marked table tops or charity shop finds can be covered with a pretty PVC tablecloth. Your spirits will be lifted by the Ditsy Tulip wipe-clean tablecloth from Dunelm, £6.

Chairs and sofas that have seen better days just need to be covered with a throw. For £12.99 at The Range you can get a fleece throw to cover your seating and give you something soft to snuggle in.

SEAT ’N’ GREET: Welcome guests to sit around your table on revamped seating.

Use offcuts of fabric, a foam pad and wadding, secured with a staple gun for a fast and fresh makeover. If you have wicker seats, spray paint will get into all the gaps.
