A savvy bargain hunter has revealed the top items you should scan at B&MCredit: Sam Penney

The 35-year-old lives in Crawley and has been running the B&M Scanner And Other Bargains Facebook group since 2019.

She started the community, which now has 324,426 members, after discovering the B&M Scanner App herself.

The barcode scanner in the app lets you see if the item’s price is cheaper than advertised on the shop shelf.

Products that are typically discounted are seasonal items and old stock that B&M is trying to shift, or they’re labelled “big brands” and “big savings”.

Hundreds of shoppers have found huge savings, with lots finding items in store that scan at just 10p at the till instead of the shelf price.

Sam told The Sun: “I thought I would give it a go I ended up getting some unbelievable items for as little as 10p.

“I opened the group so members could share ‘finds’ and the other members from all over the country could check their local stores.”

We spoke to Sam about the top items she recommends scanning with the app to increase the chances of finding B&M bargains.

Seasonal items

One of the top things Sam looks out for when browsing the aisles is seasonal items.

This means items which only stick around for a certain time of the year, such as Halloween or Christmas goods.

Sam says these bits and bobs are among those most likely to be reduced heavily.

She said: “The things I look out for in store are seasonal items such as Christmas items like gift sets, chocolates and decorations will drop dramatically in January.

Summer items will drop by September, and winter essentials will drop when it starts getting warmer.”

This means it’s a good idea to head to your local B&M towards the next season change so that you can keep an eye out for some discounts.

Start by scanning the items in those seasonal aisles, usually those that have already been reduced slightly are those which could have even bigger discounts on the app.

Bedding and blankets

Bedding and blankets are another big ticket item to point your scanner, and could well be discounted down to as little as 10p.

Sam even has a handy tip for how to spot the ones which are likely reduced by a lot of cash.

Sam said: “Look out for two sets of bedding, exactly the same, but one with a £20 sticker and one will be £19.99 – often one of these will be reduced by huge amounts and the other full price.”

Sam has previously found stylish double duvet sets reduced from £20 to just 10p.

She also found a thick fur throw cut down from £14.99 to £2.

Fitted sheets also have big discounts, Sam managed to bag a huge king size teddy fitted sheet scanning for just £1 instead of £10.

Another tip from Sam is to keep an eye out for bedding and blankets towards the beginning of summer, when B&M is likely trying to clear winter stock.

Household appliances

Sam has also managed to bag some absolute bargains for her home too.

Household appliances are another one of her go-to items which are worth having a scan to see if they’ve had their prices cut right down.

Recently, she managed to pick up a window vacuum for just £1 because B&M had changed its packaging and they were clearing the old stock.

Sam said: “They often change packaging, for example, I got a window vacuum for £1 – it was exactly the same as the £20 ones just in different packaging.”

Having a look around for lonely appliances left in stores is also a good option, according to Sam.

She said: “It’s worth looking for items that are the only ones left I found a floor steamer for 10p it was the only one there and looked out of place!”

Electricals

Fans of B&M might already know this one, but a bargain hunter’s go to is electronics too.

Whether you’re after bits for your kitchen or leisure items, due to their usual high price – being able to find a discounted electronic good can be a huge bargain.

Shoppers have managed to find huge bargains like air fryers, hoovers, and heaters.

Sam’s personal finds include toasters and speakers for as little as £1, reduced from £20.

Others have found TV aerials scanning for 10p instead of £18.

Of course, it’s important to make sure your item is in tip-top working order and hasn’t been reduced because it has an issue.

Make sure you keep your receipt until you’ve tried the item each.

Homeware and furniture

Sam’s final items to always keep an eye out for because they can often be reduced heavily are homeware and items of furniture.

In the past, she has bagged dozens of stylish rugs for her home and decorative pieces too.

These include a faux fur luxury rug scanning for 10p instead of £40.

She also managed to pick up an originally £15 candle holder for just £4 after using the app.

Shoppers regularly share their bargain finds on Sam’s Facebook group too.

One previously found a console table which said £80 on the box and scans at £5 on the app.

It goes for garden furniture too, recently another shopper found the discounter had slashed the price of a “stunning” corner sofa set by a whopping £75.

Sam’s top tips for bargain hunting at B&M

Sam has also shared her savvy tip for finding the best B&M Scanner App bargains.

She says going to the store early in the morning gives you the best chance of adding things to your favourites on the app.

That way you can keep track of price changes.

She added: “Checking up on the group on Facebook is great as people will post a bargain say in Glasgow and then people will go and find that item in London it really helps people find the good deals in their local stores.”

Sam also said to be aware that 10p items show up as “item not found”, but so do new items that are not on the system yet so it’s worth taking to the till and asking the staff to check the prices to see if they are 10p or just new to the store.

How does the B&M scanner work and how can I get it?

The barcode scanner in the app lets you see if the item’s price is cheaper than advertised on the shop shelf.

The B&M scanner is located on the B&M Stores mobile app, which can be downloaded for free on your smartphone.

Shoppers can download it on the App Store or Google Play.

Once you’ve got the app, click on the “scan” button at the bottom of your homepage.

This will then bring up the camera on your smartphone, which you’ll need to use to scan barcodes.

When you’ve found a product you want to scan, simply point your smartphone camera toward its barcode.

The app will then automatically bring up the item’s price – this is when you’ll know if it is reduced or not.

Bargain hunters say some items come up as £1, 50p or even 10p through the app.

But of course, not all items will scan at a lower price – so don’t be disappointed if the thing you’re after isn’t reduced.

Quite often, you’ll need to have plenty of time on your hands to go around and scan a lot of items in store.

While the reductions can seem random, it’s usually items that are seasonal or old stock.

Another thing to note is that the reductions do sometimes vary between stores.

This means that just because something is reduced in one B&M, prices vary from store to store depending on stock levels.

But if you do get lucky and find a bargain, the product should scan at that price at the till.

The scanner only works in stores and not online though.
