The upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro will boast a ‘enormous’ leap in console power, experts claim.
The upgraded console is set to land later this year but supposed elements of its makeup are already being shared online.
Sony’s new unit is expected to be just in time for one of the biggest game releases of the next few years – with Grand Theft Auto 6 promised for 2025.
Insider Gaming revealed a number of headlines for the PS5 Pro, foremost of which is ‘rendering 45 per cent faster than PS5’ thanks to a refreshed graphics processing unit (GPU).
The leak also mentions 8K resolutions and artificial intelligence.

Chief among gamers’ reasons for excitement is a vastly improved graphics processing unit (GPU)
As for the CPU (central processing unit), it remains unchanged from the original PS5, but an all new ‘high frequency’ mode will allow the CPU more power, at the expense of one per cent lower GPU performance.
On the flipside, this mode will increase CPU power by 10 per cent.
Hard drive storage is also set for an increase. The PS5 Pro is said to have a one terabyte hard drive, up from 825 gigabytes for the original PS5.
To further improve graphics, ray tracing – used across modern games to deliver high-quality visuals – is said to be getting a huge boost of two to four times that of the basic PS5 model.
And the overall power of the GPU is said to come in at 33.5 teraflops of power, over three times that of the original 2020 machine, offering an 8K resolution.
One standout specification mentions ‘custom machine learning architecture’.
Sony have been contacted for comment about the ‘leak’.
Rob Dwiar, of TechRadar, said of the GPU improvements: ‘This is an enormous jump and represents something that we might see generation-on-generation rather than something incremental, as we saw with the PS4 Pro last generation.’
It comes just weeks after Sony declared the current PS5 console is entering ‘the latter stage of its life cycle.’
Senior vice president Naomi Matsuoka said the company expects the sales pace of the PS5 to start falling from next month after dominating the console war since its release, selling over 50 million units in that time.
She said: ‘Looking ahead, PS5 will enter the latter stage of its life cycle.
‘As such, we will put more emphasis on the balance between profitability and sales.
‘For this reason, we expect the annual sales pace of PS5 hardware will start falling from the next fiscal year.’
Last October, Sony unveiled a new slimmed-down and stripped-back version of the console, which featured a smaller and lighter form factor, as well as a detachable disk drive and one terabyte of additional memory for storage.
Experts suggest the PS6 will come out November 2027 if recent console release patterns are maintained.
