COLD weather is bad for your iPhone – and in extreme cases, can cause your handset to stop working altogether.

But if you’re somewhere very cold, it could be dangerous if your iPhone shuts down.
Thankfully you’ll typically see warning signs that something is about to go wrong.
Apple calls this “extreme performance management”, but said that it’s “temporary” if linked to cold temperatures.
Extreme performance management can also kick in when a battery is severely degraded – for instance, if you’d used the iPhone extensively for many years.

But anything that affects the health of the battery can cause performance management to be activated.
According to Apple, there are severn things that you might notice.
The first will only happen in extreme cases: your camera flash will be disabled, and will be marked as such in the camera app.
But you may also notice that app launch times are longer.

You may also experience lower frame rates when scrolling.
The backlight might start dimming automatically, although you should be able to override this.
Your speaker volume may lower by up to -3dB, which would be difficult to notice.
Frame rate may drop across apps, gradually worsening depending on the condition of your device.
And apps that refresh in the background might need to be reloaded when launched.
Of course when your iPhone reaches severely low temperatures, the battery can stop functioning altogether.
You might see your charge dropping wildly, before your iPhone ultimately shuts off.
It’s important to move your iPhone to a warmer place to allow it to recover.
However you should avoid applying any direct heat to the iPhone.
