STRUGGLING to snooze?

If you are like me, your sleep pattern has probably been all over the place during lockdown.

As today marks World Sleep Day, I speak Dr Sophie Bostock, an expert for Bensons for Beds, and Pam Johnson, the company’s head of buying, for their top tips on getting good kip.

PILLOW TALK: Pam says: “Pillows can help your comfort and spinal alignment for an improved sleep.

A key point to consider is the height of your pillow, to suit the way you sleep for the majority of the night.

“It’s important your pillow correctly fills the gap between your head and mattress, supporting the head comfortably, ensuring good spinal alignment.

A pillow of the incorrect height will impact the pressure points of your body on the mattress, meaning uncomfortable sleep.”

I’m a big fan of Bensons’ Sleeper pillows, designed for the way you sleep.

You can get a £16.99 Front Sleeper, a £17.99 Back Sleeper, £18.99 Side Sleeper or a £21.99 Ultra Deep Side Sleeper.

If shopping via topcashback.co.uk, you will get up to 8.8 per cent in cashback.

THROW AWAY: Dr Sophie says: “To get into a deep sleep, the body needs to cool by about 0.5C.

Being cosy and warm can help you relax before bed but try to avoid heaping on too many covers, or you’ll be more likely to wake up during the night.”

So, rather than fork out for extra blankets, it may be time to ditch that extra layer.

This costs nothing and can make a huge difference.

KEEP CALM: Dr Sophie says: “The ideal mindset before bed is to feel calm, relaxed and safe.

Untidy and cluttered bedrooms can also be stressful.”

There are plenty of free ways to help you relax, including guided meditations on Spotify and YouTube videos.

But if you are looking for something extra, the Calm app is very good.

You can currently get seven days of premium access for free (continue with it and the cost is £2.42 or £28.99 annually) but I was sent a new member welcome offer with 40 per cent off (£17.39 for the year).

SAVING: up to £11.60, plus one week free

DUST DO IT: Clean sheets can really help you snooze.

Dr Sophie says: “If you are sensitive to dust mites or other allergens, this can irritate the nasal passages and make it harder to breathe through the nose.”

Wash bedding once a week at 60 degrees or higher to help reduce those house dust-mite levels.

You could also invest in a bed cleaner.

I like the Pifco handheld UV bed cleaner, £20 from kettleandtoasterman.co.uk.

It is cheaper than the handheld UV vacuum, £59,99 from vonhaus.com.

Top Tip

MAKE tonight’s takeaway last for other meals.

Chip shop chips can be frozen and re-cooked.

Also, save any sauce leftover from your curry as you can just add meat and rice to create another tasty dinner later in the week.
