A new song from the hit Broadway show Hamilton has been released, but this ditty was not written Lin-Manuel Miranda – it was create by artificial intelligence.

A film production student at California’s Chapman University used an machine learning model capable of producing written content from simple commands.

The system, named Calamity A.I, was fed 45TB of text data and then Elis Weiss, the human mastermind, entered one sentence: ‘Here are the lyrics to a new song from the hit musical Hamilton: An American Musical.’

The AI returned a full song of lyrics with four versus, a chorus and bridge that included the characters from the story.

However, the system added a few extras to its version – Eliza gave Hamilton syphilis, which he then proclaimed Hillary Clinton as his new lover.

Creative and artistic expression has long thought to be beyond the capability of AI, and many have insisted it will be one of the few areas where humans will have an edge over machines.

But the new computerized composer suggests the line between man and machine may not be so clear.

Weiss used the AI application Shortly Read, which incorporates the GPT-3 machine learning language model used by the non-profit research group backed by Elon Musk, OpenAI, CNET reports.

The song includes a story of Hamilton’s past regarding his mother, leading up to his successful career and how he ‘met a certain lady called Eliza.’

The system, named Calamity A.I, was fed 45TB of text data and then Elis Weiss, the human mastermind, entered one sentence: ‘Here are the lyrics to a new song from the hit musical Hamilton: An American Musical. 'What's your story' is the beginning of the chorus

However, it takes a turn in the next line of lyrics with: ‘I’m 90% sure she gave me syphilis.’

‘But I hope I gave it back to you.’

And then Hillary Clinton makes a random appearance.

‘Hillary Clinton is my new Eliza.’

‘Til my wife died’

Other than these parts of the song Weis told CNET that ‘overall it’s incredibly convincing.’

Hamilton, the original piece, follows the story of Alexander Hamilton who was a founding father of the US.

The musical made its debut on Broadway August 26, 2016 and quickly became one o the most popular and profitable musicals of all time.

Although this is the first Hamilton song to be written by AI, it is not the first piece music.

In 2017, researchers at Kingston University in London created a ‘Bot Dylan’ computer that is capable of writing its own folk music.

The system was trained using 23,000 pieces of Irish folk music, which taught the machine to learn the patterns and structures that make for a catchy tune before attempting its own.

The idea of turning computers into composers was taking a step further just earlier this year when researchers from the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology unveiled a singing robot capable or writing its own lyrics.

The robot learned to write songs by studying tens of thousands of songs written by the musical greats.

The robot was given a dataset of 50,000 lyrics covering all genres including rock, hip-hop, jazz and progressive as part of its song writing education.

Professor Gil Weinberg, creator of Shimon said he works with humans to create music, they are a mixture of songs made by human and robot together.

‘I suggest a theme, he writes lyrics and gives me a melody that I compose into a song – we then perform it together with other humans while he sings,’ he said.

The process starts when Weinberg gives Shimon a theme – such as space – and the robot will then go away and come up with a set of ‘coherent lyrics’ that flow together.

‘It learns the correlation between the thousands of lyrics it has studied and can then go into the dataset to generate new lyrics that fit melodies,’ said Weinberg.

‘I always wanted to write songs, but I just can’t write lyrics. I’m a jazz player,’ Weinberg said. ‘This is the first time that I actually wrote a song, because I had inspiration: I had Shimon writing lyrics for me.’
