Aldi announces 99p beer sale after buying pub stock and saving it from waste

ALDI is launching a new range of reduced price beers that start from just 99p each after saving pub stock from going to waste.

The selection includes 13 beers and ales that have been purchased direct from UK breweries.

The breweries would usually sell this booze straight to pubs, but they haven’t been able to do this due to coronavirus restrictions.

Pubs are currently shut, with fears that they could be closed until the summer, so the alcohol would have otherwise been tipped away.

The cheapest booze in the new Aldi range is Spitfire Gold, which is a Kentish ale from Shepherd Neame brewery, and costs 99p per 500ml bottle.

A further ten beers from the selection cost £1.49 each, including the Wild Gravity IPA from Bad Co brewery, and Business As Usual traditional amber beer from Derby Brewing.

Wild Gravity IPA usually costs £1.80 from Asda, while Business As Usual is priced at £3 per bottle direct from Derby Brewery.

Spitfire Gold typically costs £1.25 from Asda although it’s currently reduced to £1 thanks to a rollback promotion. Morrisons sells bottles for £1.75.

You can see the full list of beers in the box above, with the range due to go on sale from tomorrow, January 28.

But as the booze will be part of the supermarket’s weekly Specialbuys, they’ll only having a limited selection in stock.

They also won’t be restocked once they’re sold out. You also can’t buy them from Aldi online.

In total, Aldi has purchased around 25,000 gallons of beer from 13 breweries.

Paul Harris, managing director at Derby Brewing, one of the breweries Aldi is working with, said: “It’s been a really difficult year for us.

“As brewers, we take pride in our beer and our craft.  It would have been terrible to see it go to waste so it’s a massive boost for us that Aldi is taking on our excess stock.”

Dartmoor Brewery’s Jail Ale is another beer bottle to hit Aldi shelves.

Ian Cobham, managing director of Dartmoor Brewery, another pub working with Aldi, said: “This past year has been very challenging with 90% of our normal trade being wiped out due to the pub closures. 

“The stop/start nature of the lockdowns has meant we have had to destroy 40,000 litres of beer and counting. 

“Backing from Aldi is not only helping us reach a larger audience but has helped us survive and we’re absolutely delighted to showcase our flagship beer, Jail Ale, in its stores.”

Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi UK, said: “Lots of our favourite local breweries have been hugely affected by the pandemic.

“As part of our commitment to supporting British suppliers, we’ve found a way to stock great quality and award-winning beers.”
