ALDI fans have been left fuming after its sold-out Kevin the Carrot toys appeared on eBay hours later for £50 more than their original price.
The toys went on sale this morning after high anticipation for this year’s range from shoppers.
Aldi even launched a new queueing system, similar to Glastonbury’s ticket website, to help the website cope with the amount of people logging on.
But thousands were left waiting over an hour to purchase the plush toys in the new system.
An Aldi spokesperson told the Sun this morning: “Our Kevin the Carrot soft toys are always incredibly popular. We have limited purchases to two soft toys of each character per customer, so as many people as possible have the chance to buy them. Additional stock will be available in store from December 6 onwards.”
Hours later they’ve sold out – and quickly reappeared on eBay with a huge markup.
Shoppers said they began getting messages around 10am – two hours after the toys went on sale – saying that they had sold out and had resurfaced on eBay for extortionate prices.
Aldi confirmed on its Twitter account that by 1pm the range, including plush toys, pyjamas and mugs, had all been snapped up.
They added: “Our range will be available in all stores on the 6th December. Please visit your local store on this date to purchase on a first come, first served basis.”
Several Kevin fans then said the toys were appearing on reselling websites, such as eBay, for significantly more.
When The Sun logged on to check, we found one giant Kevin the Carrot toy, which retails for £19.99 from Aldi, was for sale at the “Buy it Now” price of £75.
One shopper posted on Twitter: “Absolutely outrageous that all the Kevin the carrots completely sold out online…There are so many ungrateful people out there who just want all of [them] to make extra cash on eBay. It’s just greed.”
Another said: “To whoever has sold out the #KevinTheCarrot toys on the #aldi site and scalped them on eBay for £75, you are disgusting and despicable.”
An Aldi spokesperson said in response: “We have limited purchases of Kevin the Carrot toys to two of each character per customer. Unfortunately, we cannot control how the toys are used after they are purchased.”
The Sun has contacted eBay for comment.
It’s not the first time the popular toys have sold out and then popped up on eBay.
Days before this year’s range went on sale, we found some toys on sale on eBay for 12 times the price.
Last year, the toys were on sale for up to £1,000 on eBay.
Here are all the Christmas ads so far including John Lewis, McDonald’s and Sainsbury’s.
Aldi has also been praised by shoppers for giving staff an amazing 10% Christmas bonus.
Meanwhile, Aldi’s Black Friday deals for this year include a Nintendo Switch for £230.
