Aldi also gave staff a 10% bonus in March to thank them for their work at the start of the coronavirus crisis.

The second bonus will cover November and will be paid out in December ahead of Christmas.

The Sun has asked Aldi to confirm whether it’s based on contracted hours and any additional hours worked, and we’ll update this article once we hear back.

Workers who received the bonus earlier this year will be able to get the second bonus too.

Aldi’s store assistants receive a minimum hourly rate of £9.40 nationally, while Londoners currently earn £10.90 an hour.

The move has been welcomed by shoppers on Twitter, with one user saying: “Well done Aldi, I hope the other big supermarkets follow.”

While another added: “Nice touch from Aldi supermarket giving staff a 10% bonus as an extra thank you for their efforts this year.

“Every little helps! Seriously though – what a nice touch to show staff you appreciate their efforts.”

And a third simply stated: “Proud to shop there.”

Aldi follows a similar move by Tesco, which is also giving a 10% bonus to permanent workers across stores and distribution centres this winter.

Hourly-paid workers will get a 10% bonus on actual hours worked while front-line managers will receive a 10% bonus on salary for weeks worked.

Temporary Tesco workers will also be eligible, if they joined on or before 1 September 2020.

The bonus will be paid out by Tesco between December 13 and January 9, 2021.

Giles Hurley, chief executive officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “This year has been a difficult one for so many and our colleagues have worked tirelessly to ensure the nation continues have access to high quality affordable food.

“This bonus is a gesture of our appreciation for our amazing Aldi colleagues who have shown incredible resilience and dedication throughout 2020.”

Tesco also offered staff a 10% bonus earlier this year to thank them for their “incredible effort” in stores.

Supermarkets have been under extreme demand during the pandemic, with panicked shoppers stockpiling goods earlier this spring.

With England now in lockdown again, we explain the rules shoppers must follow when heading to supermarkets.
