The winner – who won $10,000 (£8,800) twice before in two previous lottery games – told officials that the money will go towards her kids’ education fund and a new family car.

She bought the winning ticket at Waldorf’s Liquors in Maryland, according to reports.

She then scratched the first lottery ticket which reportedly revealed that she had won just $15 (£13).

But she decided to keep playing and used her modest winnings to purchase a second ticket.

She added: “When I saw the $100,000 (£88,000), I couldn’t believe it. I stayed calm, but all I was thinking was ‘Oh, my God.”

She raced to the car park to share the news with her husband as she waved the winning ticket in the air.
