APPLE’S new iPhone 12 is fitted with seriously clever wireless charging tech – and it’s called MagSafe.
How does it work, why is it so good, and what MagSafe accessories can you buy right now?
What is iPhone MagSafe?
MagSafe is a brand new wireless charging system for the new iPhone 12.
If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Apple previously used “MagSafe” as the name for its magnetic charging cables on the MacBook.
Those cables have been retired, so the name is being re-used for a clever iPhone charging system.
It lets you wirelessly charge more easily, at a faster rate, and enables loads of new accessories to boot.
The new system was announced at Apple’s Hi, Speed event in mid-October 2020.
How does iPhone MagSafe actually work?
One of the big problems with wireless chargers is aligning the coil inside the phone with the pad.
This can affect charging rate significantly.
So Apple has bundled a magnetic system into the back of the phone that will line up perfectly with MagSafe approved chargers.
These magnets can also be used for quick-attach MagSafe accessories, like card holders that snap to the back of your iPhone.
Apple has already unveiled several cases and card holders that are available to buy online right now.
And with a MagSafe wireless charger, you’ll get double the rate of charge compared to the old system on previous iPhones.
For the geeks, you’ll get a 15W charging rate – versus 7.5W with the older system.
Are there any Apple MagSafe chargers for iPhone?
Apple has already unveiled two MagSafe chargers.
The first costs £39.99 and is called MagSafe Charger. It’s a circular pad that works just like you’d expect.
This is available to buy right now on the Apple Store here.
There’s also a second product called the MagSafe Charger Duo that isn’t available to buy just yet – but likely will be soon.
It’ll be capable of wirelessly charging your iPhone 12 and Apple Watch at the same time.
Apple’s MagSafe-friendly smartphone models include iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Max.
