ENERGY bills are on the rise and households are looking for ways to cut back on their bills.

As many as 5million Brits are wasting a whopping £128 a year on their heating bills, according to Uswitch.

But there’s a simple way to save, and for some, fixing it could save even bigger amounts of cash.

The energy price cap rising by nearly £900 within weeks which will push up energy bills.

So making the saving could be an essential way to make sure you’re not paying more than you need to.

Research by Uswitch found that five million of us have our heating set at 22 degrees Celsius.

That’s apparently as hot as Lanzarote and another 1.5million homes have their thermostat set even higher at 25 degrees – that’s warmer than Sydney Australia at some points in winter.

It’s safe to say, this is likely to be higher than you need it when it comes to setting the temperature of your home.

And for each degree lower you set your thermostat, you could save on average £128 a year.

That means fixing the temperature setting to 21 degrees could save you a significant amount of cash.

And if you’re one of the millions who set your thermostat higher, you could save even more by reducing it to 21.

Will Owen, energy expert at Uswitch.com, said: “By turning thermostats down by just one degree, people could potentially cut their energy costs by an estimated £128 a year.

“Many people have been turning down the thermostat over the last 12 months.

“Some will have been prompted to lower their thermostats so they can reduce their bills, while others are likely trying to reduce their carbon footprint.

It’s not the only way you might be able to save cash on your bill by looking at your energy usage around the house.

Energy bill help

If you’re worried about paying your energy bill, you should speak to your supplier in the first instance as they have schemes in place to help with bills and arrears.

Your local council may also be able to help with cash and grants if you are struggling with bills through the Household Support Scheme

The winter fuel payment scheme, where those getting the state pension can get between £100 and £300 to offset the cost of keeping their homes warm.

Low income households can get £25 a week to help with energy bills during the winter thanks to the cold weather payment scheme too.

The warm home discount scheme means you can a £140 payment that goes toward your heating costs – but you need to act quick as this scheme has already closed at most energy suppliers.
