Twinkling lights, sweet-smelling trees and joyful ornaments don’t need to be confined to downstairs rooms. Why not spread the festive cheer to the bedrooms, too?

After all, the country seems to have gone wild for Christmas decorations this year —some have been up since late November in an attempt to cheer up our lockdown lives.

‘A stylish Christmas-theme bedroom will do wonders to lift the spirits, since it’s likely most of us will be celebrating in our own homes’, says Jason Billings-Cray, Christmas shop buyer at John Lewis.

Here’s where to start.

Spruce up bedtime

You might not relish the idea of lugging a floor-to-ceiling size Norway spruce up the staircase. Instead, the 2.5 ft white light tree from Wayfair will create the ultimate Christmas centre piece for your bedroom (£122, wayfair.co.uk).

For a more contemporary look, there’s the snow-touched Magical White Pine tree from Cox & Cox, which can be adorned with decorations or left bare, displaying the built-in warm white lights (£225, coxandcox.co.uk).

If space in your bedroom is limited, try a small, real Alberta Spruce Christmas tabletop tree to put on a dresser or chest of drawers (£14.99, gardeningexpress.co.uk).

For the ultimate space-saver, try a Christmas tree wall hanging (£19.95, notonthehighstreet.co.uk).

Dec the walls

For a subtle, chic look, go for a white-and-silver themed tree. Try white feather baubles, silver-beaded North stars and add a touch of gold with mini wreaths and glass pinecones (from £2.80, thewhite company.com).

If you want bolder colours, try the Harlequin paper baubles in red, black and white or red leaf decorations at Oka (from £20, oka.com).

‘But don’t feel you have to keep the decorations to the tree,’ says Sue Jones, co-founder of Oka. ‘Hang little ornaments on drawer handles or on mirrors.’

For something truly special, there’s Lalique’s crystal ornaments. New for this year, is a hanging glass medal with a poinsettia motif — the velvety red plant. Each ornament is handmade (from £80, lalique.com).

For more modest budgets, try Wilko’s Rococo Assorted Christmas baubles (£5, wilko.com).

Lovely linen

Novelty bedlinen is a no-no, unless it’s for a child’s bedroom. Yet there are plenty of tasteful seasonal designs in adult bedding. Sophie Allport’s Home For Christmas bedding features delicate sketches of pine trees, piles of presents and a family carrying a toboggan (from £45, sophieallport.com).

John Lewis offers a penguin duvet and pillowcase as well as a more grown-up Stag Scene set with red piping (doubles from £50, johnlewis.com).

Alternatively stick to a crisp white base and layer some Christmas accessories. Update your bedlinen with Rise & Fall’s sateen-woven white cotton bedding (from £149, riseandfall.co).

Add festive cushions for a subtle nod to Christmas such as the penguins cushion from Wayfair (£26.99, wayfair.co.uk). A touch of faux fur will complete the look. Sheridan’s Dalmar throw is sure to see off any winter chills (£111.30, sheridanaustralia.co.uk) or try a budget version from Next (from £50, next.co.uk).

Wonderful wreaths

‘A wreath hanging from a bedroom window or door is a super-simple, yet elegant way to add Christmas touch to any bedroom,’ says Chrissie Rucker, founder of The White Company.

It’s also a great way to achieve the scent of Christmas. Bloom & Wild’s Festive Forest Wreath has metallic poppy seed heads and pinecones (£58, bloomandwild.com).

For one you can use every year, you can find the Barclay wreath with pinecones and foliage at Perch & Parrow (£50, perchandparrow.com) or a cheery ring of red berries from Sophie Allport (£39.99, sophieallport.com).

Twinkling nights

Choose twinkly warm white lighting to avoid anything that resembles Santa’s grotto. Pearl cluster LED lights will give a warm glow (£34.50, oliverbonas.com) or wrap Knirke lights on a delicate silver wire over your headboard and mirrors (£11, heals.com).

Candlelight is a must at Christmas. Try LSA’s glass lantern with a glittery gold chevron motif (£50, lsa-international.com) or festive Frankincense & Pine candle from Heal’s (£23, heals.com).

For added luxury, there’s Diptyque’s Sapin de Nuit. It diffuses wintry notes including fir trees and rosemary, and the holder is illustrated with a stag in snowy Paris (from £32, spacenk.com).

To avoid naked flames, use a battery- LED pillar candle (from £15, oka.com).

What your home really needs is… a folding desk

The most prosaic Christmas present that you give yourself often proves to be the most life-enhancing.

If your New Year’s resolution is to ensure that working from home does not dominate your existence, your abode needs a desk that folds away. Or, through clever design, even be used as a dining table.

The Victorians declared that it was time to play when they brought out the folding card table.

A desk that folds away serves the same purpose. At Daal’s, you can buy a clean-lined folding desk in white, black, natural and walnut (daals.co.uk, £46.99).

At Argos, you will find Habitat’s Drew in white (argos.co.uk, £50). Wayfair has the Towley (£104.99, wayfair.co.uk) and the Alondra storage unit that folds out into a desk (wayfair.co.uk, £124.99).

The British will return to the office in 2021, but many will still work from home several days a week.

The trend has already inspired the Dining Desk, which will be available from January from the family design business Consider64.

This is an elegant contemporary table in which a section of the centre folds out to become a substantial work station, pictured (consider64.co.uk, £2,999).

In 2021, let’s remember the timeless warning about ‘all work and no play’.
