Aldi is selling steak with heart-shaped butter as part of its Valentine’s offer

Supermarket offers are likely to be popular this Valentine’s as restaurants remain closed around the country due to Covid restrictions.

Meal deals from some grocers range from £15 to £20, with options including starters, main, sides, desserts, bottles of booze and chocolates.

But not all stores are doing set courses.

For example, some are doing “mix and match” Valentine’s deals where you only pay for the items you buy.

Valentine’s Day 2021 supermarket meal deals

HUNGRY for love? Here’s how much each supermarket is charging for their Valentine’s Day meal deals.

For some, there is a set price for starters, mains, sides, dessert, drinks and a box of chocolate.

But others are doing “mix and match” deals where you just pay for exactly what you want.

  • Aldi – £7.55 (Only pay for what you choose – price based on cheapest combination, food only)
  • Asda – £15 (One starter, one main, two sides, one dessert, one drink or chocolates)
  • Co-op – £15 (One starter, one main, one side, one dessert and one drink)
  • Iceland – £8 (Two steaks, chips and onion rings for £8, or two mains and one dessert from the Gino D’Acampo range for £8)
  • M&S – £20 (One starter, one main, one side, one dessert, one drink and one box of chocolates)
  • Morrisons – £15 (One starter, one main, two sides, one dessert, one drink or chocolates)
  • Sainsbury’s – £20 or less (Only pay for what you choose, but you only save money if your meal comes to more than £20 – price based on cheapest combination)
  • Tesco – £15 (One starter, one main, one side, one vegetable dish, one dessert and one drink)
  • Waitrose – £20 (One starter, one main, two sides, one dessert, one drink or chocolates)

Aldi – £7.55 (cheapest combination without drink, or £12.50 with bottle of Prosecco)

  • Available: February 10 – until sold out
  • No set price – only pay for what you choose

Aldi isn’t doing a set meal deal price for its Valentine’s Day offering, so you just pay for the items you want.

It means you don’t save any money, but you could end up spending less if you don’t want a lot of food.

As part of its Valentine’s Day selection, Aldi is selling heart-shaped garlic bread, beef wellington, steak and lamb shanks.

For dessert, choose from mini pancakes, profiteroles or white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake.

For those wanting three courses, plus a side, the absolute cheapest price is £7.55.

This is if you go for either the chicken wings or cooked vegetable vegan Thai roses for your starter, both priced at £1.69, followed by vegan “no beef” bouguignon pies for the main, priced at £1.69 for an individual pie, so £3.38 for two.

Pair the above with 99p heart-shaped garlic bread as your side, and the £1.49 mini pancakes for pudding, and your total would come to £7.55.

The Aldi menu doesn’t include a drink, but if you buy a bottle of the supermarket’s £4.95 Prosecco your total would be £12.50

Co-op also charges £15 for it’s Valentine’s Day dine in offer

Co-op customers can pick up one starter, main, side, dessert and bottle of fizz for £15 as part of its Valentine’s promo.

Or if you’re avoiding alcohol, the meal deal price is £12 if you substitute the booze for a soft drink.

Options for the main include steak, salmon en croute and lasagne, while dessert could be chocolate and orange tortes, sticky toffee pudding or raspberry panna cotta.

We worked out the best saving you could make is £9.80 if you choose any £3.50 starter, £7 steak, £2.80 mashed potato, £3.50 chocolate tortes and the £8 Prosecco.

This combination of food would usually cost £24.80 – but you’ll only pay £15 because of the meal deal.

If you’re going non-alcoholic, the most you can save is £8.05 if you go for the options above and the £3.25 Coca-Cola instead of the Prosecco.

Sainsbury’s is advertising its Valentine’s deal as £20 ‘or less’

Sainsbury’s shoppers can choose a starter, main, side, dessert, plus a bottle of wine or chocolates for £20 or less this Valentine’s.

But with this deal, you’ll only save money if your meal would normally come to more than the £20 limit, otherwise you’ll pay the standard price.

It means how much you save depends on the combination you choose.

Options include fancy food like oysters, steak and Gu desserts.

When we checked the individual product prices on the Sainsbury’s website, the most you can save is £6 when purchasing the most expensive meal combination.

To get this saving, pair a £3.75 starter – so you could choose scallop gratin or bresaola – with the crusted cod and ratatouille, usually £10.

Then choose any side that costs £2.70, partnered with any £3.30 GU dessert and the £6.25 Prosecco.

The above items would normally cost you £26, but you’ll only pay £20 because of the deal.

Some of the items included in the Valentine’s Day selection are currently on offer, but we’ve based the maximum saving on the full price would usually be.

Tesco is charging £20 for its Valentine’s Day dine in for two deal

Choose one starter, main, side, vegetable, dessert and drink for £15 at Tesco this Valentine’s Day.

Diners can tuck into heart-shaped brownies, beef Bourguignon or steak, and Tesco Finest Prosecco as part of the romantic selection.

But the 2021 selection doesn’t include the lobster mac and cheese that featured last year.

The most shoppers can save is £15.20 compared to buying each item individually.

For this saving, you’d need to buy the £3.50 smoked salmon tarts for your starter, and the £8 rump steak and pink peppercorn butter for your main.

It doesn’t matter what side or vegetable dish you choose, as they’re all priced at £2.60 each.

For the end of your meal, the heart-shaped brownie is the most expensive – therefore giving the best saving – at £3.50.

The maximum save for your drink includes Prosecco, usually priced at £10.

This combination would usually cost £30.20 – but you’ll only pay £15 because of the deal.

Here’s what you’ll find at Waitrose this Valentine’s Day

Waitrose is charging £20 for its Valentine’s Day deal – the same price at last year – and it includes one starter, one main, two sides, one dessert, and the choice of a drink or box of chocolates.

There are 50 different food options in total to choose from.

Some of the mains include venison shoulder steak with a dark chocolate butter, lamb racks and ribeye steak with Bearnaise sauce.

As for dessert, some of the sweet treats on the menu are salted caramel chocolate tarts and espresso martini torte from the Heston Blumenthal range.

The maximum saving you can get compared to buying each item individually is £16.99.

For example, the priciest starters cost £4, with choices for this price including live parfait and seafood shells, while the most expensive main is the £10 ribeye steak with Bearnaise butter.

Pair these with two of the rainbow salads, priced at £3 each, so £6 in total, the £5 vintage cheddar heart, and the half bottle of champagne, which would usually cost £11.99 on its own.

This combination would usually come to £36.99 but you’ll only pay £20 thanks to the deal.
