Health secretary Matt Hancock is set to make an announcement to the House of Commons this afternoon, with fears London could be plunged into Tier 3 within 48 hours.

Before the surge in infections in the last few days, the earliest London was expected to go into Tier 3 was December 19, a few days after the review on December 16.

But the timetable has been dramatically hauled forward, with scientists and ministers believing more urgent action is needed to stop the sudden spiral in cases.

Can theatres open in Tier 3 areas?

No, theatres along with other hospitality businesses must close in Tier 3 areas.

This includes casinos, bingo halls, cinemas and concert halls.

Outdoor cinemas and theatres can remain open for drive-in only – but must close at 11pm.
