IS your child spending most of their day behind a screen?

Home-schooling and keeping little ones entertained indoors has seen time spent on computers and watching TV increase by 50 per cent during the pandemic.

If you want to break the cycle during half term, here are some cheap, screen-free activities.

BUILD A CANAL: The Canal and River Trust (canalrivertrust.org.uk) have some brilliant ideas on their website. From waterside bingo to building your very own canal sandbox, its tasks are a bit more out of the box than I’ve seen elsewhere.

WRITE IT UP: This is the perfect time to get creative juices flowing and encourage them to sit down with a pen and paper. It always help to have a goal, so start by heading to schoolreadinglist.co.uk, which advertises writing competitions for all different ages and how to enter them. Plus, they could win some excellent prizes.

TRY AN EXPERIMENT: Littletikes.co.uk has launched a huge toy sale, with up to 50 per cent off. For example, pick up the very popular Wonder Lab Centre for just £50, down from £99.99.
Budding scientists will love it as it has lots of interactive features including test tubs and levers as well as experiments to try, and parents will love the fact that it keeps kids busy for hours.

COLOUR IT IN: There are so many great offers on at hobbycraft.co.uk this week. Its colour-in cardboard houses range has £5 off, but the cheap treat I like is the DIY faux stained glass sun catchers.
You fill in the stencil with colours and then decorate your windows with them and they’re good value — just £1.30 each or five for £5.

SWITCH UP PARK LIFE: You might have exhausted the joy in your daily walk (I know I have) but The Royal Parks is encouraging everyone to get outdoors, and it seems like it might be safe to do so now the temperature has risen a little.

You have to sign up online but head to royalparks.org.uk for its discovery week and find activities you can set kids, which will be sent out daily.

Today’s task is all about seasonal change and includes a podcast about ponds and on Friday it will sort you out with a step-by-step gardening activity packs.
