Mazda, Nissan, Toyota and Tesla have been named in recalls due to faulty airbags, unintended acceleration, seatbelt issues and misaligned cameras.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed more than 436,000 vehicles in total from all four carmakers could be dangerously defective.

Mazda recalled its 2014 to 2018 Mazda3 and 2016 to 2021 CX-3 vehicles for rearview camera display issues, and Toyota’s Lexus, Corolla, Highlander and Tacoma made from 2023 to 2023 may have airbag deployment problems.

More than 66,159 Nissan LEAF vehicles manufactured from 2018 through 2023 could have unintended engine torque.

And Tesla Model S and X vehicles could have seat belts that incorrectly connect to anchors.

NHTSA announced each recall separately, but they were all announced this month by the carmakers.

Mazda: Recalling 227,300 Mazda3 and CX-3 vehicles

‘Mazda Motor Corporation has decided to conduct a Safety Recall on certain 2014-2018MY Mazda3 (5-door hatch vehicles only) and 2016-2021MYCX-3 vehicles,’ the Japanese carmaker said in a statement.

The rearview cameras may have been improperly designed, with the harness becoming damaged from vibrations as the vehicle moves.

This could cause the pins to wear out, causing electrical resistance and resulting in image distortion or flickering on the main screen.

‘A distorted or flickering rearview camera image while reversing could affect driver judgment, increasing the risk of a crash,’ according to Mazda, which issued the recall on July 19.

‘For vehicles that have a verified and diagnosed, distorted or flickering image, please contact Dealer Recall Help for next steps regarding repairs to the vehicle.’

The issue stems from the improper assembly of airbags in several Toyota-made vehicles: 2023 Corolla, Corolla Cross, Corolla Cross Hybrid, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Tacoma, 2023 Lexus RX350, RX350 Hybrid, RX500 Hybrid, 2023-2024 Lexus NX250, NX350, and NX350 Hybrid.

Toyota issued the recall on July 12, stating the electrical connection inside the steering column’s spiral cable assembly may be insufficiently welded.

This faulty design could lead to problems with the separation and deactivation of the driver’s airbag.

‘A deactivated driver’s airbag that does not deploy as intended increases the risk of injury during a crash,’ the company shared in the recall announcement.

Owners of the vehicles should take their cars to a dealership to be inspected and replaced if necessary.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on August 27, 2023

Tesla issued its recall on July 19, citing problems with seatbelts in models made from 2021 through 2023

The recall, submitted to NHTS on July 17, cites issues that could initiate an unintended acceleration.

The issue stems from the software, which is triggered when ‘a driver takes both of the following actions within 8 seconds after deactivating cruise control, Intelligent Cruise Control or ProPILOT Assist functions: (a) switches driving mode (i.e. from ‘D’ to ‘B’ position, or ‘ECO’ mode, or e-Pedal ‘ON’); and (b) then applies and releases the accelerator pedal,’ according to Nissan’s report.

The acceleration can be stopped once the brake is applied, but the risk of crashing is high.

Tesla: Recalling 15,869 Model S and X vehicles

The Elon Musk-founded company issued its recall on July 19, citing problems with seatbelts in models made from 2021 through 2023.

‘The front-row seat belts may not be connected properly to the pretensioner anchors, which can cause the seat belts to detach,’ the report from NHTS reads.
