WITH lockdown and months of working from home, many cars are being left on the driveway.

But using your motor less can actually cause more problems.

Drive costs down with our tips for looking after your car during lockdown

I spoke to Helen Robinson, marketing director at Euro Car Parts, for tips on the little things that can save forking out on big problems later.

BAD WEATHER: Keep your car protected from the elements. If possible, park in a garage. Make sure it’s free from humidity and damp as this can corrode paintwork and cause mould. No garage? Use a car cover.

My tip: Try eBay as a great place for cheap and cheerful car covers. I found one for just £7.99, down from £11.99. High Street prices are usually at least £15.

SAVING: At least £4

INSIDE STORY: Remember to clean the interior. Organic debris such as food can rot over time, which means you’ll be returning to a bad smell. In some extreme cases, it can cause damage, too. Use a dry cloth to regularly dust leather or coated fabrics. For a deeper clean, use a damp cloth and gentle soap to rub the fabric down. Always soak up any leftover moisture with a dry cloth afterwards. Harsh chemicals or household laundry soaps can cause discolouration.

TURN IT OVER: If a car is not driven for a long time, the battery can run flat and damage the internal mechanics. Start your car and drive for about 15 minutes every two weeks or so. If it’s not possible to drive, just let the engine run for 15 minutes.

WINTER WONDER: Once life is more back to normal, make sure your car is winter-ready. With ice on roads, check your tyres have enough tread. A winter check-up can be around £20 at some garages. Instead, I always get a free winter car check at KwikFit or Halfords to discover what you need.

SAVE: Up to £20
