CHRISTMAS is a time for giving – but with money tight for most of us this year, the way we give may have to change.

Sir Winston Churchill famously said: ‘We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give’, so giving your time, ideas and understanding may better reflect the true spirit of Christmas, especially in your working environment.

Giving to others at work is vital

The recent ‘Friends in the Workplace Survey’ found giving to others at work is one of the most important things we can do in the office.

With almost three in five employees saying they valued giving at work more than a higher salary.

Alongside this, 54 per cent felt being appreciated by others was a key reason for them staying in their job, radically reducing staff turnover and improving workplace happiness.

So how can you give at work and help others feel better? Here are the top five tips from Sun Jobs.

1. Chatty Cafes

Give the gift of time with a ‘chatty café’. Designate a table in your works canteen for staff to sit if they’re feeling lonely, low or just need to talk.

Ensure you regularly sit and really listen to how people feel.

2. Introduce a ‘Giving at Work’ Scheme

Payroll giving allows staff to donate to their favourite charity without paying any tax on it.

It must be paid through PAYE from your wages or pension.

3. Volunteer Days

Ask your firm to set aside a couple of days each year as volunteering days.

You can either volunteer for a charity of your choice or organise the whole workplace volunteering together for the same charity.

4. Step up for the extra office jobs

From fire wardens to first aiders, every workplace has a number of volunteer posts they need to fill.

Stepping up helps others and means you get to meet lots more people around the business.

5. Consider the benefits for you too

Giving a little extra can help build your skill set and showcase your leadership ability.

If you’re looking to climb the career ladder or build your network, it will put you front of mind for any new move you want to take.

Giving it all you’ve got to find a new job? Here are three different roles where you can give as much as you get.
