Instead of shelling out, try these tips to get pics worth framing just from your phone.

BACKGROUND DETAILS: Position people against a background that is as plain as possible.

Sue Burden, retail director at photo printers Max Spielmann, says: “Try to have the backdrop to your photo as clean as possible, with minimal clutter and free of colours that could take the focus away from the family. A large wall space would be ideal.”

COMPOSITION: In your smartphone’s camera settings, turn on grid lines, which split the screen into nine blocks.

This will help better align subjects when shooting.

To create a good composition, try to get faces along the grid lines or at the intersections of them.

LET THERE BE LIGHT: Lighting hugely improves photos.

Snapping outside in bright sunlight is one way to get some lovely group shots.

Or indoors, try using an LED lamp, which will add soft lighting, says Lizzie James of photography store Jessops. She adds: “When light comes slightly from the side, it makes a more flattering shot.”

STILL LIFE: Eliminate blur by keeping your phone steady. Lizzie says: “Whatever you’re shooting, the key to getting standout shots is sharpness.”

A smartphone isn’t designed to be held like a camera, so it can be trickier to keep still.

Try using a tripod. You can get a basic one from around £6 on Amazon.

PORTRAIT PERFECT: Play around with the settings on your phone’s camera to get a more professional finish.

For example, switching to portrait mode on the iPhone lets you take a photo of your subject in sharp focus in the foreground, while keeping the background fuzzy.
