Keeping the kids engaged is not easy but there are some fantastic free and purse-friendly resources out there to help.

Here are my favourites . . .

BBC Bitesize: This website offers free lessons across all ages and includes videos, quizzes and practice activities. There’s even an extra resource section for parents. See bbc.co.uk/bitesize. From the end of January, customers with BT Mobile, EE or Plusnet Mobile can access the content without eating into their data allowance. More mobile companies are expected to follow suit soon.

Amazon: Many popular school books are free when downloaded for a Kindle or tablet. Search for the correct age group and select “Kindle” as the format. Then download titles instantly, saving pounds. Easy.

Days out: School trips are out of the equation, but the National Marine Aquarium is offering virtual days out. Every Friday during the lockdown, kids will be able to tune in to two shows — Deep Science and Mermaid Tales — on its YouTube Channel and hear Marina, the resident mermaid, read a short story. Visit national-aquarium.co.uk for details.

Games: Fun website busythings.co.uk provides 1,000 online games and activities for nursery and primary school children, covering maths, English, phonics, geography, history and coding. It is charging just £1 to join during the school closures. You can also download activity sheets for free at learningresources.co.uk and orchardtoys.com.
