Two High Street chains are planning to create more than 1,000 jobs over the next two years in a boost for Britain’s coronavirus-hit labour market.

Restaurant chain German Doner Kebab (GDK) is set to open 12 restaurants by the end of the year, creating 480 jobs across cities including Liverpool, Nottingham, Bradford and Plymouth.

And retailer Geek Retreat, which sells ‘geek culture’ merchandise such as comics, posters, memorabilia and games, will open 100 stores over the next two years, creating around 600 jobs.

Geek Retreat opened its first shop in Glasgow in 2013 and already employs 110 people across 14 city-centre shops.

GDK, which also began in Glasgow and employs 1,500 people in the UK, is pencilling in additional openings across the USA, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Ireland.

In another sign that many British businesses are beginning to get back on their feet following the national lockdown, recruitment firm Morgan McKinley said hiring activity in London’s financial services sector bounced back in the three months to September 30.

Although nowhere near the same level as a year ago, job vacancies in the City were up 53 per cent following a 60 per cent slump in the three months to June 30.
