The best hot cross buns for Easter

By Daniel Jones

ALDI’S bargain 25p hot cross buns have beaten pricier versions from posh supermarkets in a taste test by respected Good Housekeeping

Budget supermarket Aldi’s Luxury Fruited Hot Cross Buns at 99p for four scored 88/100 to land the best overall out of 10, beating more expensive packs from posh stores Waitrose and M&S.

Tasters loved “the toffee-like sultanas throughout, as well as the subtle notes of cinnamon and clove”.

Last year’s winners M&S were still strong contenders – getting top marks out of the eight entries for the best gluten-free category.

Tasters praised the M&S Made Without Hot Cross Buns, £2 for a pack of four, for their  nutmeg flavour and attractive glazed look, giving a score of 88/100.

Good Housekeeping’s team of testers are a mix of experts and ordinary folk.

Stacey Smith, food and drink editor at the Good Housekeeping Institute, said: “From the top tasting Easter Egg to the best Hot Cross Buns, we’re delighted to offer our expert insight into where people can find the best tasting Easter sweet treats this year.

“Aldi’s Hot Cross Buns are clearly a great pick for those on a budget (but not willing to compromise on taste!) and Cadbury’s proves its chocolate credentials with its Mini Egg Easter Egg coming out on top.”

M&S has launched Marmite hot cross buns for Easter this year, while shoppers mocked its aubergine-shaped egg.

Over at B&M, it’s selling a boozy Baileys Easter egg that’s white chocolate, strawberries and cream flavour.
