COVID rules will be paused to allow loved ones to sit down together for their usual Christmas dinner.

But you need not spend lots decorating the table — with a few tricks you can create magic quickly and cheaply.

I spoke to Kane Hughes, a table-setting expert and spokesman for myjobquote.co.uk, who shared his tips . . .

PERSONAL TOUCH: Kane says: “Place names make people feel special and are cheap and easy to do. You just need some white card, folded over, and a nice pen with which to write the names. Place each folded card in the middle of a placemat or plate — and you have the bonus of not having to tell people where to sit.”

FLOWER POWER: Raiding your garden for some blooms and maybe foliage for the table may be an option. Or the supermarkets have some bargain buys. Kane suggests: “You might put flowers in a vase in the centre of the table but also foliage as a runner down the middle. Placing individual flowers next to cutlery, or place names, can also look elegant.”

TWINKLE, TWINKLE: Ambient lighting can make all the difference — and hide a multitude of sins. Kane says: “Candles are a great way to add atmosphere, creating a warm glow. To save money, tealights are the answer — get 100 for £2.50 at Wilko at the moment. You can then spot the candles around the table, while ensuring they are not next to anything flammable. Or you may like to cluster groups together.”

CLOTH IT: If your table has seen better days, a simple tablecloth can work wonders and need not be expensive.

Kane says: “This can transform your table and if you are handy with a sewing machine you could make one yourself from a piece of material you may already have. This saves money and is more original.” Have a hunt around the home and see what you have.
