Francisco Teran has been a security guard at a luxury watch store in Manhattan’s Upper East Side for almost two years. These days it feels like a totally new job.

A year ago, a typical day for Mr. Teran consisted of taking his post inside the store on Madison Avenue and watching shoppers file in and out all day, keeping an eye out for potential theft or other suspicious activity. Now, because of Covid-19, shoppers enter mainly by appointment, making Mr. Teran a combination bouncer, receptionist, health-care worker and sentinel.
