Thousands of home insurance customers who are working from home may be needlessly paying extra for cover.
The number of people adding ‘business use’ to home insurance policies has jumped since the start of the year, research by comparison site Confused.com reveals.
In October, 6.7 per cent of customers paid extra for the add-on compared to 5.5 per cent before the pandemic.
The average home insurance policy with business cover is £68 more expensive at £224 a year, compared to £156 without, reports Confused.com.
You only need to update your policy if your home is permanently used as an office or if you now store stock at your house (after closing your premises, for example).
Equipment supplied by an employer will be covered under its business insurance.
Louise O’Shea, of Confused.com, says: ‘Customers who are home working due to the pandemic don’t need business use added to their policy.’
