If you’re looking to book your summer holiday, work out when to take annual leave

The Easter Bank Holiday is nearly over, but you can maximise your holidays by working out the best time to take annual leave in the rest of the year.

Using your annual leave tactically and incorporating bank holidays and weekends mean you can take a longer break for your summer trip.

This might not apply to shift workers who will often have to cover bank holidays and weekends.

We explain the best time to book annual leave this year if you want to have a longer stretch off work.

What Bank Holidays are coming up in 2022?

First, you need to know when Bank Holidays are coming up this year.

The next Bank Holidays will be in May, June and August, with two more in December.

Workers are getting an extra break in June this year to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

After today, there are six more Bank Holidays in the calendar for 2022:

  • May 2 (Early May bank holiday)
  • June 2 (Spring bank holiday)
  • June 3 (Platinum Jubilee bank holiday)
  • August 29 (Summer bank holiday)
  • December 26 (Boxing Day)
  • December 27 (Christmas Day substitute)

It’s short notice now but if you’re able to book off April 25 to 29, you’ll end up with 10 days off in a row but you’ll only use five days of annual leave.

By taking annual leave on May 30, 31 and June 1, you’ll be off work for nine days but only use three of your holiday dates.

Workers who book time off from August 30 to September 2 will get a nine day break, too.

Booking off December 28, 29 and 30 will give you 10 days work-free in a row.

Bear in mind that these days will likely be popular dates for your colleagues to book off, so you might have some competition.
