As a result, the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) estimates UK security firms need over 62,000 new officers this year.

Roles in the industry are a lot more varied than most people realise, including door supervision, to manned guarding, CCTV surveillance, airport security, close protection, security systems installers and concierge services, each with their own working environment and hours.

Currently, the industry is worth £ 4.1 billion in 2021, expected to rise to £ 4.9 billion by 2026, with quick progression to senior roles for the right candidates.

So lock down your future with a little help from Sun Jobs. Here’s all you need to know about getting into the industry.

How diverse is the security industry? I’m worried I won’t fit in.

Official figures show UK security officers come from 195 different nations and one in ten are female.

With such a wide variety of different job roles, there’s a place for everyone.

What is the pay like?

Starting salaries average £24,000, rising to an average of £32,000.

Top close protection officers and bosses of major security organisations can take home six-figure salaries.

What qualifications will I need?

Security officers must have a good level of English, be over the age of 18, have the right to work in the UK and hold an SIA licence.

How can I get started?

To work legally as a security guard you need a front-line Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence.

Before you apply for this licence you need to train for an approved ‘licence-linked qualification’, so employers can be sure you have the skills and knowledge you need to do the job safely.

The qualification you need will depend on the type of security work you want to do.
