How to set up an Instagram shop and make quick cash with your new ‘side hustle’

INSTAGRAM is great for sharing photos but it’s also become a great way for small businesses to make money with their own virtual shops.

It’s fairly easy to set up Instagram Shopping, you just need to follow the steps below.

Instagram has a few rules before you can set up an Instagram Shopping account.

You can find these on its website and they include selling an ‘eligible product’, complying with the merchant and commerce policies and having your own separate website from which you sell your product.

If you tick all these boxes then you can convert your Instagram account or a new account to a business account.

Go on your profile and then click in the upper right hand corner and open Settings.

Then scroll down and click “Switch to professional account”.

Then you’ll be asked to select a category for your account such as “Shopping & retail” or “Product/Service”.

Once you’ve set this up you’ll be able to add in things like a website link and a phone number.

Then you can add your Instagram business account to a Facebook Page or create a new Facebook Page if you don’t have one.

Go to your new business profile and click “Edit profile” and then click “Page” under “Public business information”.

This is where you can add a Page or make a new one.

You can then use Facebook for Business to set up a Product catalogue for your Instagram using the steps in its Business Help Centre.

This can be a bit tedious if you’re listing and adding all your products from scratch but if you already use an e-commerce platform like Shopify you can just transfer the catalogue over.

Once you’ve set up the catalogue you’ll need to submit your account for review by going to Settings and selecting to sign up for shopping.

You’ll be notified when your account is approved.

Once you’re accepted you can turn on the shopping features and start tagging items in your posts.

The catalogue tags will show potential customers how much a product costs and can lead them to your website.

As well as the “Tag products” option for your posts you’ll also get access to Instagram Shopping stickers for your Stories.
