They are surprisingly economical to use — and there are cheaper and easier alternatives for keeping toasty in bed without whacking on the heating.

Check out these brilliant bargains to make those chilly nights a little less frosty.

Blanket coverage: If you are after one of these plug-in beauties, I don’t blame you. The experts at Silentnight say that an electric blanket can heat a bedroom for less than a penny per night.

At Asda, a king-size Silentnight Comfort Control electric blanket is £30, but if you order one from very.co.uk it is £26.

Hit the bottle: A hot water bottle may be old school, but it works wonders. I like to fill one up, then pop it into my bed for a while before hitting the hay. This way the bed is nice and warm when I get in.

B&M has a huge range of hot water bottles to choose from, with most at sale prices too. I like its cable-knit cream version, which holds two litres of water. Was £3, now £1.

Put a sock in it: For me, one of the easiest ways to warm up is by putting on a pair of thick and fluffy bed socks. I find that once my feet are nice and toasty, the rest of my body starts to warm up too. A two-pack of fluffy socks is £6 at Next, but at studio.co.uk a pack of two is just £3 — working out at just £1.50 a pair. Bargain.

Tog standard: If you haven’t done so already, it is time to ditch the summer duvet for a thicker and heavier winter tog. At wayfair.co.uk the luxury microfibre 15-tog double duvet is on sale for £15.99, down from £26.99.
