And there are some cheap ways to keep your home safe, clean and free of pests.

GRUBS UP: Rentokil says the most effective way to control spiders is to limit their food source, and that costs nothing.

Clear away dead flies, woodlice and other bugs.

Vacuum floors and carpets regularly too, getting rid of crumbs that attract spiders’ favourite prey.

This means you won’t have to splash out on a spider-catching tool (£12.99 at Lakeland) . . . and you won’t get any nasty eight-legged surprises either.

FLY KICK: When it comes to flies, the colder weather means having the windows open less and fewer flies coming in.

But even so, cover all food and drink with clingfilm and empty your bins regularly.

It saves forking out for unsightly fly tape, £2.49 on eBay.

MINT IDEA: Peppermint oil is a cheap and easy way to ward off creepy crawlies.

Pop a few drops in a diffuser to keep your home fresh and spider-free.

A 10ml bottle of Miaroma peppermint oil is currently half-price at Holland & Barrett, down from £6.50 to £3.25.

But use it sparingly and keep well out of reach of children and animals.

MOTH MENACE: Moths can make a meal of your wardrobe, especially knitwear and cosies.

Have a deep-clean to rid your closet of any lurking moths.

They love those dark, undisturbed corners — so empty out drawers and make sure you vacuum them.

Then disinfect all areas to get rid of larvae and wash your clothes.

Next, pop in some cheap-and-cheerful moth balls, £2.97 on Amazon (cheaper than the £4.99 at healthylivingdirect.com, for instance).
