REDUNDANCIES are at a ten-year high as the winding-down of the Government’s furlough scheme begins to bite.
Official figures show a 138,000 rise in layoffs between June and August — the most since the 2008 financial crisis.

The surge takes the jobless total to a three-year high of 1.52million.

Sectors leading the recovery are logistics and warehousing, with vacancies up 77 per cent; manufacturing, up by 19 per cent; and cleaning, up by 14 per cent. Trade and construction, health and nursing are holding up well too.
Research by jobs board Adzuna shows that while hiring is still 31 per cent down on normal, vacancies are finally back on the up.
‘ONGOING SUPPORT’
Adzuna’s Andrew Hunter says: “Overall hiring activity is approaching normal levels but it’s a stormy picture. We will see a very different jobs market post-pandemic.”
At the sharp end of the resurgence is telecoms firm CityFibre, recruiting 10,000 people for network construction jobs.
Fibre engineer Renelle McCormack, 23, lost her job as a chef when lockdown hit but retrained with CityFibre.
Renelle, 23, from Solihull, West Mids, says: “One of the things that appealed to me about the job with CityFibre was the fact you didn’t need any existing qualifications.
“I had a total career change and CityFibre has provided ongoing support and training since the beginning. I’ve learned how to climb poles, work on cabinets and got health-and-safety training.
“The work has historically been seen as male-dominated and I was initially a little nervous.
“But I quickly realised that it was about working with your teammates to get the job done, not about your gender.”
