LIDL is recalling packs of pork mince over fears they could contain plastic.

The supermarket says some packets of its Birchwood XXL Pork Mince with 12% fat may contain small pieces of plastic that could make the product harmful to eat.

The product recall only applies to the packets of pork mince weighing 1kg, which come with a best before date of February 13, 2021.

The recalled packs have “Birchwood British Pork” and “family pack” writing on the label and the best before date should be clearly visible on the front.

No other products are affected by the recall, the supermarket said.

Lidl is urging customers who bought the mince with the affected Use By date to not eat the meat.

Instead, you should return it to your nearest Lidl store to get a full refund. You don’t need to have the receipt to get your money back.

Your product recall rights

PRODUCT recalls are an important means of protecting consumers from dangerous goods.

As a general rule, if a recall involves a branded product, the manufacturer would usually have lead responsibility for the recall action.

But it’s often left up to supermarkets to notify customers when products could put them at risk.

If you are concerned about the safety of a product you own, always check the manufacturer’s website to see if a safety notice has been issued.

When it comes to appliances, rather than just food items, the onus is usually on you – the customer – to register the appliance with the manufacturer as if you don’t there is no way of contacting you to tell you about a fault.

If you become aware that an item you own has been recalled or has any safety noticed issued against it, make sure you follow the instructions given to you by the manufacturer.

They should usually provide you with more information and a contact number on its safety notice.

In some cases, the manufacturer might ask you to return the item for a full refund or arrange for the faulty product to be collected.

You should not be charged for any recall work – such as a repair, replacement or collection of the recalled item.

Lidl has more than 800 stores across the UK. You can find your nearest one by using its store locator tool.

Alternatively, you can take a picture of the product with the Use By date clearly visible and send it to [email protected].

You’re then advised to dispose of the product.

If you’d like more details, you can also ring Lidl’s customer services on 0370 444 1234.

In the recall statement, the supermarket said: “Lidl GB wishes to apologise for any inconvienience caused.”

We’ve contacted Lidl for an additional statement as well as information on how much the packets of pork are sold for and how many may be affected.

Earlier this month, Lidl had to recall Red Hen Breaded Chicken Nuggets and Red Hen Southern Fried Chicken Pops after salmonella contamination was found in some of the products in the batch.

Meanwhile, Tesco recently issued a recall on packs of spicy chorizo slices over fears they could be contaminated with listeria.

Pieces of plastic were also feared to have contaminated a popular baby cereal by Aptamil which was recalled from major UK supermarkets and retailers last year.
