McDONALD’s has made a huge change to its burgers for the first time in decades.

The fast food giant has changed how it cooks and prepares classic burgers including its cheeseburger, Big Mac and Quarter Pounder with cheese.

The changes will affect McDonald's menu classics like the Big Mac and cheeseburgers

The changes began rolling out to all 1,450 stores this week.

I took a trip to a McDonald’s development kitchen to see if I could taste the difference between old burgers and the new versions.

How have the McDonald’s burgers changed?

McDonald’s has made five changes to the way it makes its burgers.

First, the McDonald’s grills now have a tighter sear, resulting in hotter and juicier beef patties.

Second, white onions will now be added to the burger patties while they are still on the grill.

Another change is that the lettuce added to Big Macs will now be extra fresh for more snap and crunch and a cleaner taste.

Lettuce will only be allowed to stay out of the fridge for up to 30 minutes, whereas in the past it could be left out for longer.

Since the beef is hotter from the grill, the cheese is guaranteed to ooze over the sides, creating an even silkier texture.

And all the beef burger buns will now come with a new buttery, brioche-style recipe for a soft, pillow-like texture, then freshly toasted for the perfect golden brown outer crunch.

The full list of McDonald’s menu items the changes will apply to are:

  • Big Mac
  • Quarter Pounder with cheese
  • Cheeseburger
  • Double cheeseburger
  • Triple cheeseburger

The changes have already been introduced in the Unites States and in Australia.

Here’s what you can expect in McDonald’s restaurants.

I tried the McDonald’s Breakfast Wrap with major change to a crucial ingredient

Quarter Pounder with Cheese

The first main difference you will notice when picking up one of these new burgers is that they are piping hot.

There is no chance of it getting cold by the time you reach your car or your table.

The new quarter pounder has a much more succulent taste, and the hotter patties are juicier.

There are now two layers of gooey cheese and the onions get the chance to soak up the meat-y juices while cooking.

Cheeseburger

The main difference you will notice in your cheeseburger is that the onions are warmer.

You will also notice the new brioche bun, as the texture is quite different to the previous version.

If you are a brioche lover you might not like the change – but the buns are also now toasted, which is a nice change if you prefer your burgers crispy.

Big Mac

The new Big Macs have a lot more crunch than the other new burgers, as they are packed with fresh crunchy lettuce and more onions which are left to crisp.

Since there are two patties in this burger, it’s also extra juicy, and the texture melts in your mouth as everything from the cheese to the sauce is warm and melted.

How to save money at McDonald’s

You might not think it, but you can end up being charged more depending on which McDonald’s restaurant you choose to dine at.

Research by The Sun found a Big Mac meal can be up to 30p cheaper at restaurants just two miles apart from each other.

If you’re looking to save, you can pick up a Big Mac and fries for just £2.99 by filling in a feedback survey found on any old McDonald’s receipt.

The receipt should come with a 12-digit code which you can enter into the Food for Thought website alongside your submitted survey.

You’ll then receive a five-digit code, which is your voucher for the £2.99 offer.

Make sure you check out all the various apps and platforms if you’re ordering McDonald’s to your home too.

Our research found some can charge up to £1.20 more than others.

How do I find my nearest McDonald’s?

If you’re planning on taking a trip to McDonald’s, you’ll want to know where your nearest branch is.

The chain has a restaurant locator tool on its website you can use to find your nearest one and check its opening hours.

Bear in mind that McDonald’s serves breakfast every day until 11am.

After that, the menu switches to the normal daily menu serving main meals like burgers, chicken nuggets and wraps.
