MORRISONS has become  the first UK supermarket to guarantee pay of at least £10 an hour under a new pay deal.

The new deal will start in April and will mean a significant pay increase for nearly 96,000 Morrisons colleagues.

The pay increase is approximately 9 per cent for the majority of colleagues with Morrisons minimum hourly pay currently at £9.20 an hour.

David Potts, Morrisons CEO, said: “It’s great to be able to say that in the UK from April this year, if you work at Morrisons supermarkets, you will earn at least £10 an hour.

“It’s a symbolic and important milestone that represents another step in rewarding the incredibly important work that our colleagues do up and down the country.”

He added: “Morrisons colleagues have earned their status as key workers, and this pay increase, many times over.”

Morrisons will also pay a London weighting to the hourly pay increase.

This means rates for inner London will be 85p per hour and 60p for outer London.

Morrisons is not the only supermarket to give its workers a pay boost.

Lidl increased entry-level wages from £9.30 to £9.50 per hour for workers outside of London in November last year.

For those working within the M25, workers’ pay packets increased from £10.75 to £10.85 per hour.

It meant that over 20,000 Lidl employees benefited from the boost.

A raft of supermarkets including Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsbury’s have banned shoppers who refuse to wear face masks in their stores.
