A four-stage roadmap for exiting lockdown will see clubbers heading for nights out for the first time in more than a year.

Mr Johnsons said he hoped the roadmap was a “one way road to freedom” but the threat from covid remained “substantial”.

He told MPs today: “Today the end really is in sight. A wretched year will soon give way to spring and summer that will be very different to today.”

Nightclubs have stayed closed throughout the coronavirus pandemic – even between lockdowns when other hospitality opened.

They will be among the last businesses to open along with saunas and spas.

Lockdown restrictions will be lifted gradually starting with schools reopening on March 8.

Six people or two households will be allowed to meet with each other outside from March 29.

Then from April 12 non-essential retail will open their doors again for the first time since January when the latest lockdown started.

At the same time pubs and restaurants will be able to serve people outside with inside dining allowed later on.

Hairdressers and zoos will also reopen in April – as long at covid infection rates and deaths continue to decline over the coming months.

Diners will be allowed inside restaurants and drinkers into pubs from May 17 if things remains on track.

Big events like concerts and sporting events could also go ahead with limits on the number of people allowed to attend, and gyms will reopen too.

By June 21 all other restrictions are set to be lifted – including nightclubs opening their doors to revellers again.

Mr Johnson’s roadmap will depend on coronavirus infection rates and deaths.

These are falling while the number of people being vaccinated is rising each day.

There are four tests the government says need to be passed before restrictions are eased:

  • The vaccine deployment programme continues successfully
  • Evidence shows vaccines are sufficiently effective in reducing hospitalisations and deaths in those vaccinated
  • Infection rates do not risk a surge in hospitalisations which would put unsustainable pressure on the NHS
  • Our assessment of the risks is not fundamentally changed by new Variants of Concern

More than 17 million have been vaccinated — including two-thirds of the 65 to 69 age group who only received their invitation letters last week — thanks to hard-working NHS staff.

Mr Johnson now plans to speed up jabs for over-50s, with a completion target of April 15.

It means 98 per cent of those most likely to die, or be hospitalised, will be protected by then.

He will also stand by his pledge to offer a second dose within 12 weeks of the first.
