It was announced last year and hailed as a major coup for next-gen consoles, including the new PS5 and Xbox Series X.

But Ubisoft said it simply won’t be ready for release, and needs to be pushed back to an unspecified date.

“We saw an outpouring of feedback from you on this beloved franchise,” said Ubisoft’s development team in a statement.

“It is your passion and support that is driving our development teams to make the best game possible le.

“With that said, we have made the decision to shift the release for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake to a later date.

“This extra development time will enable our teams to deliver a remake that feels fresh while remaining faithful to the original.”

The team added: “We understand the update might come as a surprise and we will continue to keep you posted on the progress of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake.”

The Prince of Persia series is an iconic video game franchise.

This series first launched in 1989, but was given a reboot with The Sands of Time on PS2 and Xbox in 2003.

The epic 3D title was an instant hit, due to its impressive graphics, puzzle-solving, fast-paced gameplay and unique time mechanics.

You play as an unnamed prince who obtains the Dagger of Time, which lets the player rewind if he makes a mistake – or to kill certain foes.

The success of the franchise helped to spawn a feature film starring Jake Gyllenhaal as the titular Prince of Persia.

A remake of The Sands of Time was announced in September last year, with revamped graphics in tow.

But it’s now unclear when the game will be released.

In other news, The Sun’s favourite alternative to a games console is the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset.

Grab a VR headset and you’ll be able to play the legendary Beat Saber – like Guitar Hero, but with lightsabers.

And Dell’s Alienware R10 Ryzen Edition is a gaming PC powerhouse that crushes both the new consoles.
