Flamin’ lovely: I love candles at Christmas for a warm and welcoming glow.

Some at etsy.com are great but can cost as much as £65.

Make a centrepiece yourself on the cheap.

You need a tiered cake stand (£6, B&M) and a selection of pillar candles (£2.50, or two for £4 at Wilko).

Put the candles on the tiers and, for a festive boost, use leftover baubles and sprigs of holly placed around the bases.

It will cost around £12.50 in total with five candles.

SAVE: £52.50

Ace your base: First things first — you need a tablecloth or runner.

John Lewis has a winter-berry disposable tablecloth for £5, much less than similar designs at Cath Kidston for £35.

Or grab a silver table runner from Wilko for £5.

It’s a great choice if you have a specific colour scheme in mind.

SAVE: £30

Cone and get it: Adding some sparkle to your table couldn’t be simpler.

All you need are a few pinecones picked up outside — saves you buying painted cones on the high street — and, if you want, glass mason jars.

Make sure the pine cones are completely dry before you glitz them with glitter or metallic paint, then put them into jars or simply place them around your table. Easy glam.

Brilliant basics: Don’t forget the festive essentials.

Pick up a pack of 20 seasonal napkins for 45p at The Range.

And you can find 12 silver luxury Christmas crackers at B&M for £2.99 — far cheaper than those sold at John Lewis, where similar ones cost £30 for six.

And a two-pack of Christmas placemats at Lakeland is £2.99, down from £4.99.

SAVE: £57.01 when buying 12 crackers
