ARE you ready to quit? The pancakes are done and some of us are thinking of giving up favourite things for Lent.
According to research by Ocean Finance, if you just forego sweet treats, you’ll save £31.20 in the next 40 days.
But I have several ideas for some emergency replacements, and a few savings, of course . . .
HOT SWAP: If you’ve decided to ditch chocolate bars, I’d keep some hot chocolate powder nearby. Cadbury’s is my favourite and it’s currently £3 at Tesco. However, I’ve been converted to Aldi’s Choceur instant chocolate drink at just 95p for 400g, thanks to shoppers who raved about the similarities — which I can confirm are true.
WINE NOT: On the wagon? You may want to stash a no-alcohol version for emergencies. Asda’s Extra Special non-alcoholic premium botanical drink is now £10, down from £12.99, and with tonic it really tastes like a boozy treat.
GO BANANAS: If giving up ice cream this Lent, try my one-ingredient recipe instead. Rather than Lidl’s dairy ice cream at £1.69 a tub, buy 1kg of bananas (approx seven) for 73p at Tesco. Freeze a couple, then take out of the freezer just before serving and blend or mash. The texture is like ice cream.
CRUNCH TIME: If you’re cutting out crisps, I suggest rice cakes instead. My favourites are Kallo sea salt and balsamic vinegar, but they’re £1.39 a pack. But I discovered The Co-Op’s own large salt and vinegar rice cakes for £1 and they taste the same.

ENJOY a taste of summer early this year with new Kopparberg passionfruit and orange cider, £1.90 a bottle at Sainsbury’s.
THE KFC popcorn chicken pizza from Pizza Hut is back. Order it as part of the £20.99 deal, which includes large pizza, garlic bread and wedges. Plus, every order includes a two-for-one KFC Boneless Banquet coupon for a later date (pizzahut.co.uk).
TIME to make a saving! I love this wall clock from John Lewis, £50. But it’s out of stock so I found a similar one and shaved a bit off the price by going for Maison Du Monde’s clock, £44.
Giselle’s little helper
Marks and Spencer has created a half-term meal plan for five lunches and five snacks for two kids that is less than £20.
