ARE you ready to quit? The pancakes are done and some of us are thinking of giving up favourite things for Lent.

But I have several ideas for some emergency replacements, and a few savings, of course . . .

HOT SWAP: If you’ve decided to ditch chocolate bars, I’d keep some hot chocolate powder nearby. Cadbury’s is my favourite and it’s currently £3 at Tesco. However, I’ve been converted to Aldi’s Choceur instant chocolate drink at just 95p for 400g, thanks to shoppers who raved about the similarities — which I can confirm are true.

SAVE: £2.05

WINE NOT: On the wagon? You may want to stash a no-alcohol version for emergencies. Asda’s Extra Special non-alcoholic premium botanical drink is now £10, down from £12.99, and with tonic it really tastes like a boozy treat.

SAVE: £2.99

GO BANANAS: If giving up ice cream this Lent, try my one-ingredient recipe instead. Rather than Lidl’s dairy ice cream at £1.69 a tub, buy 1kg of bananas (approx seven) for 73p at Tesco. Freeze a couple, then take out of the freezer just before serving and blend or mash. The texture is like ice cream.

SAVE: 96p

CRUNCH TIME: If you’re cutting out crisps, I suggest rice cakes instead. My favourites are Kallo sea salt and balsamic vinegar, but they’re £1.39 a pack. But I discovered The Co-Op’s own large salt and vinegar rice cakes for £1 and they taste the same.
