MANY of us make it our New Year resolution to get active. With many gyms now shut, this may make your 2021 goal seem even harder.

But you do not need a gym — and you can save on pricy memberships. These savvy sporting ideas will keep you fit, safe and not out of pocket . . .

Run it: Jogging costs nothing and is one of the easiest ways to up your cardio. If it seems like a chore, especially in winter, why not try an app to spice things up?

I love RockMyRun, which measures your personal pace and then matches your music’s beat to it.

The app is free to download on Android and iOS and some of the industry’s finest DJs, such as David Guetta, Afrojack, and Major Lazer helped to create it.

Insta-fit: Instagram is full of fitness influencers competing for likes and follows, often posting free workouts with short video-snippets.

Replicate these at home or in the gym – this will save you forking out for a personal trainer costing £30 to £65 an hour. Some also offer great apps that cost very little.

I love Courtney Black’s, which is full of videos and live workouts as well as meal plans that can be personalised, and costs £15.99 a month.

Weight to go: Heavy kitchen items can be used as makeshift dumbbells, helping up your resistance training with zero gym equipment required.

Cans can be used as smaller weights, while two-litre drink bottles can be used for slightly heavier resistance. Free and simple.

Great outdoors: It may be a tad chilly but there are hundreds of free-to-use outdoor gyms across the country. Even in Tier 4, for now at least, outdoor sports facilities are allowed to open and can be used by individual households, bubbles or two people from different households.

With a range of familiar kit, from cross trainers to leg presses, they cater for both cardio and resistance workouts. Find your nearest at tgogc.com/find-a-gym. Just be sure to keep safe and use anti-bac before and after using any equipment.
