Nerida O’Callaghan has been hand-making detailed miniatures for 30 years. Now a new ABC show is spotlighting a craft she believes is on its way out

Nerida O’Callaghan still remembers the first time she went to a miniature shop in the 1980s, in Sacramento, California. “I thought I died and went to heaven,” says the 75-year-old, now a retired Sydney primary school teacher.

“I was always interested in miniatures but until then, I didn’t realise it was a legitimate hobby.”
