Sony confirmed Tuesday that the PlayStation 5 (PS5) will be getting a new VR headset that is said to provide the ‘ultimate entertainment experience.’

The next-generation device will offer ‘dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity,’ along with giving users a ‘greater sense of presence.’

The PlayStation VR (PSVR) will also come with a new controller inspired by the PlayStation 5’s Dual Sense, released last year, and have a single-cord setup.

The current PSVR headset is compatible with the new PS5, but Sony said it wants to offer a next-generation VR system to go with its newest console in 2022.

Hideaki Nishino of Sony Interactive Entertainment said on the PlayStation Blog: ‘We’re continuing to innovate with our new VR system so that our fans can continue to enjoy the unique experiences that are synonymous with PlayStation.’

‘We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PSVR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input.’

‘It will connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify set-up and improve ease of use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience.’

Sony unveiled its PlayStation 5 for $499 in September 2020 and following the November launch, the firm says it sold 4.5 million consoles by the end of December.

The first VR headset was released in 2016, with connection of the PlayStation 4 that change the way users played video games.

However, with the popularity of the new console, the Japanese firms feels a new PSVR headset is in order.

Not only will users have a more powerful VR headset, but the announcements says they can expect a cutting edge controller.

‘One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics,’ Nishino shared in the blog post.

‘That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences.’

That is all the details Sony has revealed regarding the controller, but the firm filed a patent in February 2020 for a motion sensing controller to pair with a VR headset, which could be a glimpse into the new innovation.

The patent does not indicate what game console or device it’s intended to work with, but says only that it will work with a ‘home-use game machine’ that ‘detects movement of a user’s hand.’

The large candy bar-shaped device will have a thin strip on the back that will be used to detect exact finger position.

And the rear of the controller has a large trigger button.

Instead of a conventional wrist strap, the patented controller appears to feature a safety strap that is fixed to the side and is meant for one’s fingers to be slid through up to the knuckles.

Unlike a traditional wrist strap, this would make it possible to release one’s grip on the controller without actually dropping it, supporting the idea that players are meant to use individual finger movements as a regular part of gameplay.
