According to a new report from Okta, the most popular workplace software tools include many of the big players you might expect, as well as a few startups fighting their way to the top. The most popular app used by businesses won’t surprise you: Microsoft Office 365 dominates both in terms of customers and active users–and by a long shot.
After that, you’ll find a few familiar names pop up: Salesforce, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google’s G Suite, and Atlassian’s Product Suite (makers of Confluence, Jira, and Trello), rounding out the top five. It’s hardly a surprise that Salesforce and AWS are so widely used, as both are the dominant players in their industries (though Amazon has started to feel the pressure from Microsoft here). A little more surprising is G Suite, which is a direct competitor to Microsoft Office 365. Okta’s study shows that 31 percent of Office 365 customers also use G Suite.
Slack, the popular workplace communications tool, comes in at number six with almost 12 million daily users. While Slack’s growth rate has slowed, it’s still one of the critical tools used by teams and organizations to keep their teams connected.
The fastest-growing tool in the top 12 is Zoom (number seven overall), the video conferencing tool that allows teams to hold face to face meetings anywhere with a reliable internet connection. Zoom went public last year and says that its mission is to deliver happiness. Based on this report, it seems like there’s a lot of happiness happening.
Rounding out the top twelve are Box, SAP Concur, Cisco Meraki, DocuSign, and Zendesk.
A few of the trends to keep an eye on: collaboration tools continue to show up at the top of the most-used workplace tools as companies increase their efforts to change the way employees work. With remote work becoming more common, it’s no surprise that Zoom, Slack, Box, DocuSign, and G Suite are so widely used.
In addition, data storage and management tools are making their way to the top of the must-have softwares for businesses. For example, in addition to the most popular tools overall, the report lists the fastest growing apps, a collection that includes Snowflake, Google Cloud, Splunk, and Looker all make that list. All are either cloud-based data storage or analytics tools.
Interestingly, both Google Cloud and Looker are a part of Google, showing that the company has made real inroads into the big-data space previously dominated by Amazon and Microsoft.
Protecting that data is another big area that businesses are building into their software tool kit. KnowBe4, a security-awareness training provider that focuses on preventing social engineering, phishing, and ransomware attacks, is the fastest-growing security app. That list also includes the Apple device-management tool jamf, and Envoy, which helps businesses manage visitors.
None of these trends is surprising, and neither are the tools businesses continue to use every day.
