From Canadian poutine to Scottish potato scones, potatoes are a staple vegetable in cuisines around the world.

But despite being enjoyed on every continent, diners still can’t agree on the best form of potato.

While many enjoy creamy options such as mash or champ, others prefer more crunchy varieties such as triple-cooked chips or crisps.

The humble potato originates from the highlands of the Andes, and was first introduced to Europe in the 16th century.

Today, it is the fifth most important crop worldwide, after wheat, corn, rice and sugar cane.

Around the world, the starchy vegetable is now enjoyed in a range of weird and wonderful forms.

In an attempt to reveal the ultimate form of potato, MailOnline turned to ChatGPT, asking the AI bot: ‘What is the best form of potato?’

The bot diplomatically stated that the ‘best’ form of potato is subjective and depends on personal preferences.

However, it eventually settled on eight popular forms.

The ‘classic comfort food’ of mashed potato topped the list, followed by roasted potatoes.

‘Roasting potatoes in the oven gives them a crispy exterior and a fluffy interior. They can be seasoned with herbs and spices for added flavor,’ ChatGPT said.

French fries (stock image pictured) came in third place, followed by baked potatoes, which the bot suggested are best served with 'sour cream, butter, cheese, chives, or other toppings'

Crisp-lovers will be happy to hear that crisps (or ‘potato chips’, as the US bot calls them) came in fifth place, followed by hash browns.

Meanwhile, two slightly unusual options – potato salad and gnocchi – were revealed as the seventh and eighth top forms.

MailOnline pushed the bot to name just one form of potato, and it decided on mashed potato.

‘Choosing one form of potato is challenging because it depends on individual preferences and the context of the meal,’ it said.

‘However, if I were to make a choice based on versatility and popularity, mashed potatoes would likely be a top contender.

‘Mashed potatoes are a classic comfort food that can be paired with a variety of main dishes, and they can be customized with different flavors, such as garlic, herbs, or cheese.

‘Their creamy texture and ability to complement a wide range of flavors make them a favorite for many people.’

The potato rating comes shortly after ChatGPT attempted to rank the items on a Full English Breakfast

Coming out in the top spot was crispy bacon, which ChatGPT called a ‘key element’ in the English breakfast.

This was followed by eggs, with ChatGPT suggesting fried or scrambled would suffice.

‘Fried or scrambled eggs are a crucial part of the meal and add protein,’ the bot explained.

The third most important element is pork sausages, which ‘contribute to the heartiness of the breakfast and are a substantial element,’ according to ChatGPT.

Meanwhile, good old-fashioned toast came in fourth place.

1. First preheat the oven to 220C.

2. Cut the bottom off the potato so one surface is flat and use a small knife to make rings around the inside of the potato.

3. Then flip the potato over so it’s resting on the flat surface and make vertical cuts around the side of the potato. Leave a space at the top that is uncut. The cuts should go all the way into the centre of the potato.

4. Brush the potato with olive oil and sea salt. Put the potato on a sheet of foil and bake for 30 minutes.

5. Take out of the oven and brush with more olive oil and sprinkle again with sea salt. Return it to the oven for another 30 minutes.

6. If you like, add grated cheese to the top and bake for another five minutes until the cheese is toasted and melted.

7. Remove from the oven, top with crispy bacon pieces and serve.
