DESIGNER perfume may make you smell expensive – and it comes with a price tag to match.

But you can create your own signature scent, and best of all it is cheaper and simple to do.

Here's how to make your own scent - we share tips from using essential oils to how to copy a branded perfume

Here’s how . . .

CARRIED AWAY: Use essential oils as the base, such as lavender, orange and ylang-ylang.

They are widely available for around £2 to £3 each from Amazon or eBay.

To make up your own fragrance, just add a drop to around 10ml of a carrier oil, such as jojoba, which costs from £5.79 on Amazon.

Or get a little more creative and try mixing a couple of essential oils.

For example, ylang-ylang and sandalwood make a deep, woody-style scent.

Try orange and lemon for something fruitier.

Decant the mix into a roller ball bottle (five 10ml roller bottles are around £3 on eBay) and leave to rest for around two weeks before use. Make a few blends to find your favourite.

DIY PERFUME: Some online suppliers give you the ingredients to mix up your own eau de toilette or parfum.

For example, Craftovator.co.uk has perfume oils based on designer scents which you can use as the basis to make your own perfume, as well as candles, room sprays or wax melts.

A 50g bottle of La Vie Est Belle oil on the site is £6.78.

To make a perfume, mix the oil with their perfumers’ alcohol, £3.10, and add to your own spritz bottle before leaving to rest overnight.

GET A WHIFF: Copying a branded fragrance you love can be a tricky task.

But The Essence Vault (the essencevault.co.uk) sells scents inspired by some well-known favourites for a fraction of the price.

For example, Jo Malone’s Peony & Blush Suede costs a whopping £118 for 100ml. But The Essence Vault’s version is £26.95 for the same size.
