COCA-COLA’S Christmas advert directed by an Oscar nominated filmmaker has left viewers in “floods” of tears.

The ad follows a dad, who works on an oil rig, doing everything he can to deliver his daughter’s letter to Santa.

Fighting against the odds – including a whale knocking him out of a boat, trekking across mountains and through a desert – he finally makes it to Santa’s workshop only to find it’s “closed for Christmas“.

It’s not until the end that the dad reads the letter. Instead of presents, his daughter has asked: “Please bring daddy home for Christmas.”

Normally, the drinks giant runs it’s traditional “Holidays are coming” advert but this year the ad was made by Oscar nominated director Taika Waititi, who is behind films like Jojo Rabbit and the new Star Wars film.

The emotional rollercoaster instantly had viewers in tears.

Another Twitter user posted a gif of Homer Simpson crying into his arm after watching the dad’s epic journey to the North Pole.

Meanwhile Cathryn Gahan wrote of the advert: “that broke me”.

Viewers can already watch the advert online but it won’t hit TV screens until December.

It will run alongside the traditional “Holidays are Coming” advert, featuring the truck and its bright lights which marks the start of Christmas for many viewers.

Aldi, Amazon and Disney are among the retailers that have already launched their Christmas adverts this year. You can watch them all in our roundup.

There are still plenty of festive trailers to be launched this year, including the highly-anticipated John Lewis one.

The retailer is keeping tight-lipped on when we’ll be able to watch it, but for now here’s an amateur advert that will have you in tears.
