What is it that enables leaders such as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson to persevere through seemingly insurmountable challenges that at first seem to exceed their limits? We all know what we do. Most of us know how we do it. But only a few of us know why we do what we do.
Yannick Theler is a leader on a mission to scale purpose in everything he does from giving feedback and running great meetings to building a winning culture. He heads up Ubisoft Abu Dhabi part of Ubisoft, the leading games developer responsible for ground breaking games such as Assassin’s Creed, CSI: Hidden Crimes and Far Cry. 1. Find Your Why.
You can trace Theler’s trajectory of success all the way back to his first passion as an ice hockey champion. Those who thrive know that if you do what you love you’ll be happier and probably perform at a higher level. This chimes with one of entrepreneur Richard Branson’s best maxims: “When an opportunity involves adventure, you can be sure I will say yes, yes, yes.” This mindset of finding your why and living it has helped Theler embrace change and excel in work and life.
2. Meaning Is The New Money.
At Ubisoft Abu Dhabi we have discovered three buckets that really matter to people: cause, community and career. The three buckets can be used to help attract and retain talent no matter where you are in the world. Most leaders just prioritize one bucket at the expense of the others. This is a mistake. When it comes to helping others achieve their full potential most of us are looking for a cause, a career and a community. A big question I ask here is are we exceeding, meeting or failing behind on our vision and values?
3. Values Equals Results.
We get the best out of our team and each other by holding everyone to the highest standards and by attracting and growing our talent using ELITE values which stands for Edge, Learning, Imagination, Team and Energy. It’s important that everyone can express themselves through the values and have the psychological safety to tell it how it is. A speak up culture beats a culture of silence every time.
4. Hire For Culture Contribution.
Remember your culture is always on 24/7 – and it’s either growing or dying.
